Tubs have a long history, dating back over a thousand years to the Roman Empire where only a select few elites had tubs, often the size of small pools.  The first modern bathtub was invented by John Michael Kohler (of the now infamous Kohler company) in 1883, which was essentially a glorified horse trough made from cast iron.
